The word 'Brandy' is a shortened version of Brandywine and derives from the Dutch word 'brandewijn' - 'brant' meaning distilled and 'wijn' meaning wine. It is an alcoholic liquor which was originally distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice, such as apples. Cognac, Armagnac, Grappa, Ouzo, Metaxa and Calvados are all different types of Brandy.

Grape brandy is
produced by the distillation of fermented grape juice. Grape brandy is
the type that is to be used by itself and not mixed with other drinks.
Unless specified otherwise, brandy is made from grape wine. Examples of
these types of brandies are Cognac which is the exclusive name for
brandy produced and distilled in the Cognac area of France, and Armagnac
from the Gascony area of France. Brandy that has a golden or brown color
has been aged in oak casks, a process called single barrel ageing. The

distilled from fruits other than grapes including apple, plum, peach,
cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and apricot. Fruit brandy is usually
drunk chilled or over ice. An example of Fruit brandy is Calvados which
is an apple brandy and Kirsch which is a cherry brandy. Many fruit
brandy types are not aged after distillation. The fruit brandy is often
a clear liquid.
