What are liqueurs? Liqueurs are sweet alcoholic drinks which are flavoured with a variety of different ingredients and come in a variety of different colors. The Alcohol content of liqueurs is not usually a distinctive feature of these speciality liqueur drinks. Most liqueur drinks have a lower alcohol content than spirits between 15% - 30% although some have a much higher alcohol content up to 55%. The name derives from the Latin word 'liquifacere' which means to melt or dissolve - the flavorings used to make liqueurs are dissolved.
What is the difference between Liqueurs and Spirits?
There are so many different types of Liqueurs and recipes that it is difficult to specify precise differences. However the general differences between liqueurs and spirits or liquors are:
A Liqueur generally has a lower alcohol content
A Liqueur is often sweetened with sugar, syrup or honey
A Liqueur is usually infused with woods, fruits or flowers with sugar in either water or alcohol or distilled from aromatic, flavouring or coloring ingredients
Flavors are dissolved to make a Liqueur - they can therefore be referred to as flavored spirits or liquor
What is the difference between Creme Liqueurs and Cream Liqueurs?
A Creme Liqueur and a Cream Liqueur are made differently - it is not just a matter of misspelling.
A Creme Liqueur has a substantial amount of sugar added resulting in an almost syrup consistency. No Cream is added
A Cream liqueur have less sugar added and always includes a quantity of cream in the ingredients
How to serve a Liqueur
